A big shout out to teacher Hidayah of Greendale Secondary School in Sengkang who reached out to us.
Teacher Hidayah has a class of enthusiastic young cyclist who wanted to do more than just clear rubbish for their VIA ('Values-In-Action') curriculum. These inspiring young students wanted to alleviate the struggles of low income families in their community.
Step 1 - These driven and smart students wasted no time, creating vibrant posters and reaching out to their fellow students and friends to get 2 bicycles donated to TheBikeShack (see 'Donate Bike' process).
Step 2 - Over the course of 1 month, every Tuesday, David coached these kids on how to maintain, refurbish and repair the bikes, which the students approached with gusto. They re-cabled gears and brakes, replace damaged parts like brake levers, torn grips, worn saddles, rusted chains, etc.
Step 3 - After repairs and a thorough wash, the bikes appeared almost new. A fitting present to the families that would now receive them
Finally, the day arrived when the refurbishment was complete. With the bikes were finally tuned and safety certified by David, we then cycled the bikes to the beneficiaries. We identified 2 families who matched the bikes the kids repaired (see blog here and here).
